Due to the US pet food recall in the Spring of 2007, many consumers have lost confidence in the pet food industry. As a result many critical websites emerged on the web promoting home made dog food and exchanging dog food recipes. But the disadvantages of making your own dog food are (1) when you lack knowledge and experience, your dog may suffer from malnutrition and develop deficiencies (2) it is more time consuming compared with prepackaged commercial dog food.

As highlighted earlier on this blog, manufacturers are taking action to prevent this disaster from happening again.

At the same time they need to deal with the dramatic drop in consumer confidence. Integrated Management Information Inc. recently announced the launch of ‘Pet Supply Verified’. This is a comprehensive new pet food verification system designed to build consumer confidence in pet food products.

This process comprises of a labeling program with a third party auditing service for pet food manufacturers and retailers. Amongst others it verifies their marketing claims.
