No dog food can cure canine kidney disease and expensive prescription diets cannot prevent kidney disease either. However, when your dog is suffering from renal failure a specialized diet can both extend his life as well as improve the quality of life. When your dog has malfunctioning kidneys the activity has dropped below 30% before you notice the clinical signs.

A kidney diet is characterized by a low protein level of high bio-availability. It has increased vitamin D3 and calcium levels and lowered phosphorous levels. On Best-Dog-Food-Guide.com I’ll explain you why this is.

But for now I have a puzzle for you.
Let’s compare two kidney diets for dogs.
Brand A is a cheap kidney diet and brand B is an expensive one.
Do you decide on price when your furry friend’s health is at stake?
Let’s look at the labels on these diets.
|
Percentages |
Brand ‘A’ | Brand ‘B’ |
| Protein | 8.2 | 8.3 |
| Fat | 1.5 | 7.6 |
| Fiber | 3.1 | 0.7 |
| Ash | 2.5 | 1.6 |
| Moisture | 78.4 | 71.6 |
Now which one would you think was the best to suit the altered needs of a kidney patient? Remember we are looking for a low protein diet.
Would you choose option A since 8.2% is lower than 8.3%?
Unfortunately the decision cannot be made by just looking at the price and the label. You have to sit down, take a pen and paper and use a calculator.
When doing the math it will show that brand A actually has twice as much protein as brand B!
