Stop Excessive Dog Chewing in 5 Easy Steps
Chewing is a very natural physical activity for dogs, however you would not want to tolerate this kind of activity with them as this is quite unhealthy. Finding different solutions to stop dog chewing can be quite a challenge, but is not totally impossible.
Although chewing by itself is a natural tendency among dogs, what is considered to be unhealthy is “destructive chewing” where your dog may chew on whatever he finds around the house, often your prized possessions. How many times have you felt frustrated because your dog just keeps chewing on anything? When chewing becomes inappropriate and destructive, you need to address this issue and not tolerate this behavior with your dog.
What Causes Excessive Chewing
Usually chewing is an activity most dogs do to pass the time. Besides from the fact that most dogs have a natural impulse to chew, they also chew when they are bored or lonely.
The repetitive motion of chewing can be quite relaxing to a dog’s nerves. Your dog may be showing signs of anxiety which manifests in the chewing.
How Can You Stop Dog Chewing?
Here are a few simple dog training tips that will help you stop your dog’s excessive chewing:
1. First of all, take your possessions away from your dog’s reach. Keep favorites like books, shoes, clothes, and also small gadgets away from him. You can find ways to dog proof your home so that your things will be safe.
2. Never leave food on the table which he could easily reach. This goes also for other things that are not safe to be left just lying around. Sometimes, you may have to confine him in an isolated area, away from the things that he would love to chew on.
3. Take him out and play some games with him. Usually excessive chewing is your dog’s way to deal with stress. Take him out for a walk on a regular basis and you will notice that he will be more relaxed.
4. Every time you see him chewing something inappropriately, give him an alternative and when he goes for it, give her lots of praises so that he will get the message.
5. Do not laugh off and call it cute when you see your dog chewing excessively. Instead, be firm about saying “No!” to him,
There are still many other ways to stop dog chewing. The important thing to remember is to train him early and in the right way.

I totally agree with your point about not leaving food where your dog can reach it. (sometimes even where you don’t think they can reach it!) Case in point – my sister had a male beagle (not a big dog). We were visiting at Thanksgiving and had a pecan pie in the middle of the big dining table. We left the house for just 45 minutes and when we got back, Barney had eaten the whole pie! He found a way to use the chairs to get up high enough to drag the pie down. We thought for sure he would be sick from all that pie, but he was ok. I don’t know if other breeds are that determined, but it’s better to be safe not sorry. This could have turned out much worse.
